In the kitchen nook studio where my creations come to life, I spend hours and hours with music in my ears, hands dancing across the paper and canvas. My work is a weaving of mixed mediums—acrylics merge with collage. Monoprints, ink and water converge in a dance of opposites; colliding and swimming together to compost old pieces and shapes into new forms. I don’t want to stop creating, ever.
For me, it’s breathing.
It’s all compost. The voice of my creative muse whispers in the spaces between the curling smoke from the nag champa incense stick burning next to my easel.
I have always been able to see, smell, taste and hear things much more deeply than most. Whether my abilities are magical powers, clairvoyant attunement, or just a lucky ultra sensitive combination of chromosomes, who knows. From a very young age I saw the colors that others couldn’t; heard the whispers from seemingly inanimate objects and living things that aren’t supposed to speak.
When I was a child, one of my best friends was a large boulder outside our home. I would love going out to put my face on its sun warmed crags, and hear it whisper tales from millennia past. I have no idea what the adults in my life thought of this friendship, beyond phrase that I heard out of the corner of my ears quite often: Molly is a special one… so sensitive.
Sensitivity to the subtle, the patterns beneath the surface, el rio abajo el rio (the river beneath the river, as Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes calls it) is a constant companion for me. I can’t not hear its flow. Sometimes it’s trickling and sometimes it’s thunderous.
I embrace the role of a channeler, guided by clairvoyant senses that navigate the vast, unseen realms of the unconscious. What emerges onto the canvas is a collaboration with more than myself, a manifestation of the hidden depths where chaos births creation. This process, bold and full-bodied, is an intimate ritual of transformation, where each piece becomes a spell, a portal, a vessel for alchemy.
My latest series, 'Earth Spirits,' is a testament to this journey—a celebration of the elemental forces that sustain us, and a homage to the intricate dance of light and darkness, in the more than human world that we exist in. There is so much more than the physical experience, and my work seeks to pull threads from the subtle energies that surround and fill us - and translate them to tangible scrawlings on paper and canvas as best I can. Anything I create is like the finger pointing at the moon or poking a stick into a vast ocean. There is no way to encapsulate the mystery of the currents of Life, but still we try.
At the heart of my artistic exploration lies a profound reclamation of the primordial feminine, an homage to the inherent power and wisdom that resides within and around us. My art serves as a bridge to the ancestral, to the primal energies that birthed the cosmos and the timeless essence of the feminine divine. It is an invitation to reconnect with our inherent power, to honor the sacredness of creation, and to awaken the slumbering force of the primordial feminine within each of us. Through this reclamation, my work becomes a beacon of empowerment, a call to embrace the fullness of our being and the boundless potential that unfolds when we tap into the wellspring of our ancient, untamed power.
In these times of great collective change, I fully believe that the most potent medicine we have is our imagination.
With it, we possess the extraordinary ability to co-create a new world, transcending the bounds of worry and fear. There is no time to waste. The canvas of our collective future awaits our bold strokes and visionary dreams, calling us to wield our creative powers not as an escape, but as an act of profound creation and transformation.
Through the act of making visible the invisible, my work is a testament to the belief that within our deepest imaginations lies the key to unlocking a future replete with possibilities, a future we dare to co-create together.
I dare you to join me.
xoxo, Molly
